Transformation and Digitisation Projects
Establishment of an Island Network Control Centre
We are proceeding with the creation of a new Distribution Network Control Centre (DDC) for the Southern Greece Regional Directorate (DPN), through the supply and installation of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Data Management System (SCADA-DMS) and Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) at the High/Mid Voltage substations. At the same time, we are proceeding with the establishment of the necessary support structures for the new CCS.
Completion of individual works:
- We completed the installation and operation of the new Central SCADA-DMS Control System (CSCS) of the Islands Region Department in September 2020.
- We completed the installation of Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) in the High/Medium Voltage substations on the islands, integrating 32 HV/MV substations into the CSCS, with a 98% implementation rate.
- We completed the works in the non-interconnected island substations of types Autonomous and Local Generation Stations
- We completed the staffing of the Distribution Network Control Center (DNCC) of the IRD enabling 24-hour operation, fully covering the areas of Chios and Heraklion. At the same time, the operational restructuring of the company’s DNCCs was finalized, contributing to the optimal utilization of infrastructure through the merging of the DNCC of the IRD and its transition into full operational deployment.
Works in progress:
- We are finalizing the digitization of the remaining IRD areas with functional diagrams and we integrate them into the Distribution Network Control Center.
- Additionally, as part of the Special Project’s completion, several supplementary actions were carried out to enhance network performance, increase RES penetration, monitor substation equipment in Local Generation Stations, and upgrade equipment within IRD’s area of responsibility.

Project benefits
The benefits of the project implementation include:
Improvement of the quality indicators of the electricity supplied (SAIDI and SAIFI), through remote controls on the switches of the medium voltage lines.
Improvement of the operation of the network, through reduction of operational costs (reduction in the employment of crews for breakdowns and planned outages).
Continuous monitoring of the status of the remote-controlled elements for optimal management of the installations and early detection of malfunctions.
Reduction of plant load and limitation of power and energy losses in the grid.
