Transformation and Digitisation Projects
Development of Smart Islands – Pilot Project and its Extension
We developed and implemented operational and management infrastructure in an unconnected island power system. Our goal was to maximize the penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and reduce the cost of operating the power system, ensuring that demand is adequately met in a reliable, secure and cost-effective manner.
The project was completed with the following achievements:
- We completed the framework of pilot deployment actions for Smart Islands in the NIS.
- We submitted the Action Plan to the RAE.
- We have submitted the project to the Commission for the implementation of the Integrated Energy Efficiency Plan.
- We submitted the first proposal for the promotion of the “Smart Islands” and we are waiting for the opinion of RAE.
- We submitted model connection and fixed price support contracts for the specific pilot projects in the NIS.
Project benefits
The benefits of the project implementation include:
Ensuring the adequacy and quality of the electricity provided, as well as improving energy efficiency through the integration of guaranteed power and ancillary services from a fully controlled Hybrid Station. This station combines renewable energy units (Wind Farms and Photovoltaic) with energy storage units.
Exploitation of new generation potential, maximising the penetration of RES in the energy mix of the PPAs.
Environmental benefits (reduction of fuel consumption, emissions of pollutants, noise, waste).
Reduction of dependence on imported fossil resources.
Minimisation of thermal production costs.
Promotion of new technologies and innovations in the operation and management of isolated island systems and micro-grids.
Developing know-how and gaining experience.
