The performance and driving range of electric vehicles largely depend on battery technology, capacity, and individual usage patterns. Below are examples of typical charging systems and the estimated time required to fully recharge the battery:

Charging Time by Charging Power

The time required to charge your battery depends not only on the software of the charging station but primarily on its power. Here you can see the differences in charging times.

Reference scenario: Charging a 58kWh battery from 20% to 80% of its maximum capacity.

Types of electric vehicle charging

Electric vehicle (EV) charging is performed through different types of current and connections, offering flexibility and options depending on your needs.

AC (Alternating Current) Charging

AC charging is based on electricity supplied from the network and converted to direct current (DC) by the vehicle’s onboard charger.

Key characteristics:

  • Source: Standard sockets, wall-mounted or floor-standing chargers.
  • Speed: AC charging is generally slower compared to DC charging. The charging speed depends on the specifications of the onboard charger and the power source.
  • Usage: Ideal for home use, as it does not require specialized or expensive infrastructure.

DC (Direct Current) Charging

Electricity is delivered directly to a device—such as an electric vehicle or battery—in the form of direct current (DC).

DC charging bypasses the vehicle’s onboard charger and delivers power directly to the battery, enabling significantly faster charging times.

Key characteristics:

  • Speed: Much faster than AC charging.
  • Usage: Ideal for fast-charging stations in public areas or along highways, ensuring quick EV charging during long trips.
  • Power levels: From 50 kW to 350 kW for ultra-fast charging.

Examples of DC fast chargers include Tesla Superchargers, CHAdeMO, and CCS (Combined Charging System).

Charging connection types

CCS Connector (Combo 2) The CCS (Combined Charging System) is the most widespread connector type in Europe. It supports both AC and DC charging, making it highly versatile for all charger types.

Charging power: From 11kw to 350kw

Type 2 Connector The Type 2 Connector is the standard plug for AC charging in Europe, covering single-phase and three-phase alternating current networks.

Charging power: From 3.7 kW to 11 kW

CHAdeMO CHAdeMO is an older DC fast-charging system developed in Japan. While still in use, it is less supported at European charging stations.

Charging power: From 100kW.

Advantage: Allows 80% battery charge in 15–30 minutes.

Constraint: Decreasing support at European stations.
