Hybrid Energy Project of Ikaria
Combining hydroelectric and wind energy through pumped storage, this project represents a significant step in Ikaria’s energy transition.
Year of operation • 2019
- Installed capacity: 2,55 MW
- Demand coverage: 30% of the island
- RES penetration: Up to 75%
The project configuration includes:
One wind farm (Stravokountouras, 2.7 MW)
Two hydroelectric stations, Mid-level: 1.05 MW, Lower: 2 × 1.55 MW
One pumping station (Lower, 3 MW)
Three reservoirs (Upper, Mid-level, Lower)
The hybrid operation of the Hybrid Energy Station (HES) utilizes two forms of RES:
Hydroelectric energy: Activated mainly in winter when water is available in the Lower reservoir.
Wind energy with pumped storage: Operates year-round, with supporting infrastructure.
This project demonstrates our commitment to sustainable development, reducing energy costs and environmental impact, while fully harnessing Ikaria’s natural resources.
